This initiative was conducted in collaboration with Oman LNG and the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) through the EJAAD platform.
The formation of biofilm in cooling water systems, particularly in Tempered Cooling Water (TCW) loops, poses a growing challenge in industrial environments. Biofilms lead to reduced heat transfer, clogging of hydraulic systems, and increased energy consumption, often resulting in unscheduled maintenance and production disruptions. Conventional biocidal treatments are often ineffective, as microbial colonies develop resistance, further exacerbating the issue.
This project aims to provide a sustainable and integrated solution by combining bacterial removal techniques with surface treatment strategies that prevent the initial adhesion of biofilms. By targeting both biofouling and microbial-induced corrosion (MIC), the project seeks to extend equipment lifespan and reduce reliance on chemical dosing.
The collaborative research not only addresses a critical operational concern but also aligns with Oman Vision 2040 by promoting sustainable industrial practices, reducing chemical use, and improving process efficiency across industrial cooling systems.
